My own story is one of trauma, disordered eating, and deep body shame. I relied on anything in a Hostess wrapper to get me through adolescence, starved myself through middle school, and binged my way into adulthood. There isn’t anything you can tell me with respect to food that I don’t understand. Trust me. I’ve been there.
There is more on my own struggle with food and body in the short piece I contributed to a book project under the heading – Lori’s Story I didn’t realize it at the time, but my behaviors with food helped me calm my dysregulated nervous system and cope with the emotions that felt way too big for me to handle.
As I healed my relationship with food and body, I knew that I had to devote my life and my work to helping other people find their way to FREEDOM. Even though I had a law degree from Harvard and a practice as a lawyer, I gave it up in order to do the immensely important work of helping people get free from their unwanted eating behaviors. Early in my coaching career, I was giving people the right tools and support and the people that put these tools into practice had amazing results. I knew I had the right system. BUT many of the people I worked with were not able to put that system into practice. They really wanted to heal and change but they just couldn’t seem to implement what I was teaching them.
This made me curious. What was it about this group of people that prevented them from using the tools that would bring them food and body freedom? If you asked them, they would have said it was because they were lazy, hopeless and broken. I knew better, so I dug deep to find the real answer. I became a student again. This time it wasn’t at the law library. I became a student of trauma, stress, the nervous system, parts work, somatic experiencing, and behavior science.
Through my various trainings and certifications, I discovered the real answer was the state of their nervous systems. They were stuck in survival mode. A nervous system that is stuck in survival mode is incapable of change. In order to change habits, thoughts, and emotions, you must have a healthy, regulated nervous system.
Although they were trying hard, they couldn’t make progress because their overwhelmed nervous systems were not able to adopt the changes they so desperately wanted. Change requires a felt sense of safety and confidence. Overwhelm keeps many people stuck in their old habits, their negative thinking, their dead-end circumstances, and FRUSTRATION.
This discovery led to a whole new layer of my work with people. I began teaching people how to harness the power of their nervous systems to first and foremost regulate their nervous systems. It was miraculous! With their new felt sense of safety and a regulated nervous system, they started integrating the tools and practices and they too were able to end emotional eating.
